Nio said its ET5 Touring wagon has unexpectedly become the company’s top-selling model, surpassing the ES6 SUV for several consecutive months, prompting a reassessment of consumer demand trends.
“The ET5 Touring becoming Nio’s top-selling model in recent months was actually somewhat unexpected for us,” Qin Lihong, co-founder and president of Nio, told reporters during a roundtable in Hangzhou on Sunday. “This has also made us reflect that we may need a more thorough and fundamental understanding of user needs.”
The ET5 Touring delivered 4,315 units in August, ahead of the ES6’s 2,877 units, according to data from CnEVPost. This was the third straight month the wagon outsold the ES6, which had long been Nio’s best-selling model. Qin said the ES6 remains “Nio’s most comprehensive and balanced product, deserving higher delivery volumes,” but faces strong competition in China’s mid-size SUV segment, which he described as “one of the most fiercely contested categories.”
The ET5 Touring, launched in June 2023, is priced from RMB 298,000 ($42,160) including the battery pack and offers increased cargo space compared with the standard ET5 sedan. The ES6 starts at RMB 338,000, while Nio’s newly launched third-generation ES8 SUV begins at RMB 406,800.
