Nio, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has launched a new initiative to combat malicious online attacks against the brand by offering rewards for tips.
The company’s legal department announced today that it will provide financial incentives ranging from RMB 10,000 to RMB 1 million (approximately $140,000) for valid information or evidence related to cyberattacks.

Nio founder and CEO, William Li, discussed the initiative in a live video on the short video platform Douyin, where he highlighted the challenges of countering online rumors and cyber violence.
“Regarding malicious rumors on the internet, it is very difficult to get evidence,” Li stated, emphasizing the need for the public’s assistance in identifying sources of disinformation.

The rewards initiative follows similar actions by other Chinese companies facing reputational risks in the digital age. BYD, for example, introduced a reward program in late 2021 to address attacks against the company, with rewards reaching up to RMB 5 million by mid-2022.
