NIO invested $32.8 million to build an electric vehicle lithium-ion battery laboratory and a cell pilot production line in Shanghai, where its global headquarters are located.
Construction of the project is expected to take place between August and October this year, and NIO will lease buildings with a total floor area of over 22,000 square meters.
The information comes from an environmental assessment report displayed on the official website of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

In the report this R&D laboratory is designed to explore the charge and discharge performance, temperature performance, and safety performance of lithium-ion cells and packaging under different physical experimental conditions such as temperature, voltage, humidity.
The NIO laboratory will require 400 R&D personnel. The laboratory will explore the material properties of cells, battery packs under certain conditions.

The lithium-ion cell pilot line and battery assembly line will be involved in the trial production of lithium-ion cells and battery packs, which will be a good prerequisite for the possibility of future large-scale production exploration, and trial samples for in-depth development.
However, the number of lithium-ion cells and battery packs to be tested was not disclosed in the report.
