The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a recall query into 27,816 Polestar 2 electric vehicles following reports that a software fix meant to resolve rear-view camera issues may be inadequate.

The Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer, Polestar, had recalled certain 2021 to 2024 model year Polestar 2 units in June 2023 to address problems with the rear-view camera system. The issues included limited visibility, inoperability, or incorrect functionality when the vehicle was placed in reverse gear.

Polestar’s proposed remedy at the time was a software update that aimed to reduce graphical rendering limitations. The update was intended to improve camera stream recovery times and eliminate map rendering on the driver display while reversing.

Despite this, the NHTSA said it has received 109 complaints from vehicle owners who experienced continued rear-view camera failures after the recall work had been completed. In July, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) held discussions with Polestar, during which the company confirmed that the initial software update did not fully correct the issue.

The recall query, a formal investigation into the effectiveness of a prior recall remedy, will evaluate whether a more comprehensive solution is necessary.

While Polestar’s EV sales have faced headwinds in several markets due to inflation, elevated interest rates, and the rising appeal of lower-cost hybrid or combustion-powered vehicles, demand in Europe has remained relatively stable amid targeted discounts and promotional offers.
