New York City is inviting manufacturers and suppliers of electric construction equipment to participate in a trial program, aiming to evaluate battery-powered machinery for public works before making procurement decisions.
The city intends to test light-, medium-, and heavy-duty electric equipment free of charge for up to six months, according to a statement from the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice (MOCEJ) and the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI).

Manufacturers have until March 10 to submit proposals, with selected companies set to be announced in April. The trial will assess battery performance, charging capabilities, usability, and environmental impact, including noise and emissions reductions.
The initiative aligns with New York’s commitment to phasing out fossil fuel-powered construction machinery, following its pledge to the Clean Construction Accelerator (CCA), a multi-city effort to promote zero-emission construction sites.

The CCA, part of the C40 global network of nearly 100 cities, aims to decarbonize the construction industry, which accounts for more than 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions and consumes over 30% of global resources.
New York, alongside Los Angeles and San Francisco, plans to prioritize zero-emission construction equipment purchases from 2025, with a broader goal of transitioning to fully zero-emission construction sites by 2030 where feasible.
