Neath Port Talbot Council has begun deploying a fully electric recycling fleet, becoming the first local authority in the UK to electrify its entire recycling vehicle operation.
Once fully operational, the fleet will consist of 21 battery-electric recycling trucks, replacing the council’s existing diesel-powered vehicles.
Fleet Rollout Underway
The first 10 electric recycling vehicles are scheduled to enter service later this summer, with the remaining trucks to be introduced in phases throughout the year.
According to the council, completion of the rollout will make Neath Port Talbot the only local authority in Britain operating a fully electric recycling fleet.
Improving Efficiency and Reducing Emissions
The new battery-electric vehicles offer a higher payload capacity than the diesel trucks they replace, allowing each vehicle to collect more recyclable material on every route.
The council said the fleet will support its efforts to maintain recycling rates above the Welsh Government’s statutory target of 70% while reducing maintenance requirements and operating costs.
Charging for the vehicles will be partially supplied by electricity generated from on-site solar panels, further lowering the fleet’s environmental impact.
Supporting Local Sustainability Goals
Councillor Scott Jones, Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said the investment represents a significant milestone for the council’s environmental strategy.
“We’re very proud to be the first Local Authority in the UK to invest in a fully electric recycling fleet. We’ve been working proactively to make this milestone a reality.”
“Not only will these vehicles help improve air quality for residents, they’ll also be cheaper to run which helps free up funds for spending on other services across the county.”
