British energy service provider Mitie has placed an order for 650 VW ID. Buzz Cargo vehicles, marking a significant milestone as the 4,000th electric vehicle added to its fleet. The company aims to transition its entire fleet to electric vehicles by the end of 2025.
The 4,000th electric vehicle, a silver-painted ID. Buzz Cargo, was welcomed into the fleet at a special ceremony attended by representatives from the political sphere. The vehicle is part of a major order placed by Mitie with VW Commercial Vehicles.
Prepared in collaboration between VW Commercial Vehicles and Mitieās conversion partner Gentili UK, the ID. Buzz Cargo features a 3.9 cubic metres and 2.20 metres long cargo area. It includes a light shelf mounted on one side and a lockable cabinet for storing high-quality tools. The vehicles are equipped with a through-loading bulkhead, eliminating the need for roof racks and external pipe racks.
With nearly 60 per cent of its fleet now electric, Mitie has procured electric vans from Vauxhall and Nissan, among others, to achieve its goal of 100 per cent electrification by the end of 2025. The major contract with VW Commercial Vehicles is part of a multi-million-pound partnership between Mitie and National Grid, where Mitie provides facility management services at over 260 National Grid sites.

The partnership with National Grid has enabled Mitie to procure additional electric vans, install more charging stations (a total of 2,800 charging points at employeesā homes and customer locations), and contribute to the stability of the power grid by maintaining National Gridās systems.
Mitie joined the Climate Groupās EV100 initiative in 2019, committing to electrifying its entire vehicle fleet by 2030. However, with the addition of orders such as from National Grid, the company’s fleet has expanded since then.

Heidi Thompson, Group Fleet Manager at Mitie, commented on the milestone, stating, āReaching our 4,000th EV is a major milestone on our journey to reaching a zero-emission fleet by the end of 2025.ā She also noted that the ID. Buzz Cargo was chosen for its comfort, driving experience, and practicality, catering to the diverse requirements of Mitie’s engineers, cleaners, and landscaping colleagues.
VW Commercial Vehicles received a large order for the ID. Buzz Cargo in January, with 100 units going to Helion in Switzerland. In November 2023, the Irish postal service also integrated 45 ID. Buzz Cargo into its delivery fleet.
