MG Motor, a subsidiary of China’s SAIC Motor, has unveiled a refreshed version of its MG4 electric hatchback for the Chinese market, with a domestic launch scheduled for September 5. Pre-orders will open a month earlier, on August 5, as the automaker aims to reinvigorate sales at home while building on solid overseas performance.

The revised MG4 features modest design and technology upgrades, along with increased dimensions. The vehicle now measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase extended to 2,750 mm. It retains a rear-mounted 120-kilowatt permanent magnet motor and an LFP battery pack supplied by Rept Battery Energy, with a top speed of 160 km/h. Battery capacity and driving range have not yet been disclosed.

Speaking to Auto-home, MG brand director Chen Cui said the new model could be among the first to come equipped with a semi-solid-state battery as standard, marking a possible shift in SAIC’s energy storage strategy.

The cabin also gets a major update, with a new cockpit system developed in collaboration with Oppo. The interface supports voice, gesture, and smartphone-based controls across Oppo, Huawei, and Apple devices, eliminating the need to download apps directly to the car. Design changes include a closed-off grille, arrow-style taillights, and a full-width LED light bar at the rear, while the MG4 continues to ride on SAIC’s Nebula EV platform.

Despite tepid sales in China—only 13 units were sold in February 2025—the MG4 has gained traction internationally. MG Motor Europe recorded 78,505 registrations in the first quarter of 2025, up 33.5% year-on-year, with the MG4 contributing significantly to that growth. In the UK, MG sold 24,641 vehicles in Q1, a 6.5% increase, with the MG4 surpassing 40,000 units since launch.

SAIC Motor plans to introduce 13 new electrified models globally over the next two years, backed by an investment of around 100 billion yuan (USD 14 billion). The MG4 will play a central role in this expansion, particularly in key markets such as Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, where compact electric vehicles continue to gain popularity.
