Mercedes is introducing its all-electric flagship SUV, the EQS, to the Chinese market on February 14 with a grand launch event. The EQS SUV will drive through a snowy field to showcase its capabilities. Although the EQS sedan has been available in China, the EQS SUV is new to the market. The company has not confirmed which versions will be offered, but customers can expect to choose from five and seven-seat configurations.
Both the EQS and EQS SUV are based on the same electric platform and have the same wheelbase of 3,210mm, however, the EQS sedan is longer with a longer rear overhang. The EQS SUV is taller, standing at 1,718mm, which is 20cm more than the sedan.

The EQS and EQS SUV have different power outputs, despite both being labeled 450+. The EQS outputs 245 kW while the EQS SUV produces 265 kW to accommodate for the weight difference between the two vehicles. The torque is the same at 568 Nm.
The shorter and taller EQS SUV has a shorter range of 664km compared to the EQS, which can travel up to 730km, as per WLTP. The weight penalty of almost 200kg also contributes to slower acceleration at 6.7 seconds to reach 100 km/h.

The EQS SUV is only 0.3 seconds faster in acceleration to 100 km/h, but the EQS has a longer range at 681 km versus the EQS SUV’s 602 km. The EQS SUV is significantly heavier, weighing 2,810kg, compared to the sedan’s 2,585kg.
The prices for the Chinese market have yet to be revealed. Mercedes faces stiff competition in the electric SUV market in China, with Tesla’s Model X and Nio’s ES7 and ES6 models, which claim over 50% of electric SUV sales in the country.
