Mercedes-Maybach, the ultra-luxury sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz, is set to debut its first fully electric SUV, the Maybach EQS 680 premium luxury SUV, on April 17, 2023, at Auto Shanghai in China. This marks a significant milestone in the automaker’s journey towards zero-emission vehicles.
This will not be the first time Mercedes-Maybach has teased an SUV concept; five years ago, it revealed a concept vehicle at Auto China Beijing. However, the German automaker has since made significant changes to its plans. In 2021, Mercedes unveiled a Maybach SUV concept model of its EQS electric sedan, which it claimed was “near-production” at the time.
Mercedes has not yet released all the details about the upcoming Maybach electric SUV. However, based on the fact that it is based on the Mercedes EQS SUV, we can expect it to be more powerful than the 580 4MATIC SUV, which has a 536 hp output and 633 lb-ft of torque. The Maybach electric SUV is expected to include the latest technology and design features, with intuitive touch interfaces and other user-friendly features.
On the inside, the Maybach electric SUV is expected to have the upscale amenities of a Maybach with ultra-luxurious upholstery and a customizable experience. Mercedes is keeping its cards close to its chest, with only a single teaser image of the SUV covered in secrecy.
The Maybach EQS 680 will be revealed at Auto Shanghai and later digitally on the automaker’s website as well as its YouTube, LinkedIn, and Twitter channels. The company has not yet released pricing information, but we can expect it to be at the higher end of the market.
Mercedes-Maybach’s move towards zero-emission vehicles is a significant step for the brand, particularly as the company also recently revealed its first plug-in hybrid, the S 580 e sedan, with around 62 miles (100 km WLTP) of all-electric range, twice that of Toyota’s Prius. The future of the luxury car market is clearly electric, and Mercedes-Maybach is positioning itself at the forefront of this shift.
