Cars are getting more sophisticated and different from before. If in the past the development of cars was centered on the engine and its toughness, now almost all aspects are developed, starting from ambient lights, HUD technology, infotainment centers, to car seats.

Perhaps this is why Mercedes-Benz partnered with an unlikely partner to develop a new system that makes their product more sophisticated than ever.

Recently, Mercedes-Benz reported that they have officially partnered with Unity Technologies to present a new Operating System (OS) that can support games such as Pokemon Go, Final Fantasy IX, and various augmented reality technologies.

Scheduled to debut on Mercedes-Benz vehicles for the 2024 model year, the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) will later be claimed to replace the current Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) software.

MB.OS will take advantage of Unity Technologies’ development platform and runtime architecture, which to date has managed to support 70% of all mobile games on the market today.

“With this new operating system we want to achieve three main things; shaping the user interface according to the luxury brand, creating two-way communication with customers, and integrating the customer’s digital lifestyle into the vehicle domain,” Mercedes-Benz head of software development, Magnus stberg.

The technology will also allow Mercedes users to customize the look of the digital cockpit, to set up 3D augmented reality maps and virtual assistants. Even better, this system will also provide an avatar that acts as a waiter who is ready to hear user requests.

By partnering with Unity, augmented reality technology will become the most important part of the driving experience offered by Mercedes-Benz. “The visuals are unlike anything you’ve seen before in the car industry, we call it digital luxury,” added stberg.
