The Mercedes G-Class, known for its iconic boxy shape and substantial curb weight, may not seem like the most natural candidate for an electric vehicle (EV) conversion. However, Mercedes surprised many with the recent unveiling of the new G580 EQ, despite its sub-300-mile WLTP driving range. Now, reports indicate that Mercedes engineers are already working on improving the electric G-Wagon’s touring ability by over 35 percent.
Equipped with a sizable 116 kWh battery, the 2025 G580 with EQ Technology offers a range of 272 miles (438 km) before requiring a recharge, according to Mercedes figures. However, Mercedes officials revealed at the Beijing Auto Show that the model will be available with a new type of battery within two years, promising a significant increase in energy density.
The new silicon-anode power pack is expected to provide a 20-40 percent boost in energy density, offering the potential for substantial improvements in the G-Class’ range. Even with the conservative estimate, the G’s battery capacity could increase to 139 kWh, potentially boosting the range to 354 miles (570 km), assuming a similar efficiency to the current model.
Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ chief technology officer, described the increase in energy density as a “true game-changer,” suggesting it will open up new possibilities for future electric vehicles. The same battery technology is expected to be incorporated into other Mercedes EVs, including the facelifted EQS also showcased at the Beijing Auto Show.
The G580 EQ boasts a quad-motor drivetrain producing 579 hp (588 PS / 432 kW) and 859 lb-ft (1,164 Nm) of torque, propelling the 3,085 kg (6,800 lbs) SUV from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.7 seconds. These enhancements aim to make the G580 EQ a more appealing option in the EV market, offering improved range and performance for drivers seeking an electrified off-road experience.
