Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the 2028 AMG GT SUV, an all-electric performance SUV with a claimed maximum output of 1,153 horsepower, a 0–60 mph acceleration time of 2.4 seconds and DC fast-charging capability of up to 710 kW.

The model is the first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house by AMG and the second vehicle based on the brand’s AMG.EA electric performance platform, following the recently unveiled AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

Three versions are planned at launch: the GT53 SUV, GT55 SUV and range-topping GT63 SUV. The vehicles are expected to arrive at US dealerships in summer 2027. Mercedes-AMG has not announced US pricing or EPA driving-range estimates.

Three Powertrain Configurations

The GT55 and GT63 use three electric motors, with one at the front and two at the rear. The front motor can be switched off when additional power or traction is not required, according to Mercedes-AMG.

The entry-level GT53 uses two electric motors, one at each axle. It also features a two-speed rear transmission, with a shorter first gear intended to support acceleration and a taller second gear designed for highway driving efficiency.

All three versions feature AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. The GT55 and GT63 can distribute power between the individual rear wheels to support traction and handling.

Mercedes-AMG quotes a maximum output of 1,153 hp for the GT63. The company also lists a 0–60 mph time of 2.4 seconds for the model.

Battery Capacity and Charging

The GT SUV uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and two battery capacities, depending on the variant.

Model Battery capacity Maximum DC charging power
GT53 SUV 106.0 kWh 600 kW
GT55 SUV 128.0 kWh 710 kW
GT63 SUV 128.0 kWh 710 kW

Mercedes-AMG says the GT53 can add up to 236 miles of WLTP-rated range in 10 minutes of charging. The GT55 and GT63 are claimed to add up to 280 miles over the same period.

The GT63 has a projected WLTP range of approximately 385 to 435 miles, depending on configuration. These figures are based on the European testing cycle and should not be treated as US EPA estimates, which have not yet been released.

Suspension and Driving Modes

The GT SUV introduces AMG Active Ride Control+, a suspension system fitted as standard to the GT63 and available as an option on the GT55.

The system uses hydraulic dampers and adjustable air springs to manage body movement without conventional anti-roll bars. It is designed to reduce body roll through corners, nose-dive under braking and body lift during acceleration.

The GT63 includes the AMG Dynamic Plus Package as standard, while the package is optional on the GT55. It includes an AMG Race Engineer Control Unit that allows drivers to adjust powertrain response, handling and traction through three rotary controls.

The SUV offers seven AMG Dynamic Select driving modes: Comfort, Sport, AMGFORCE Sport+, Race, Slippery, Eco and Individual. The modes adjust vehicle behaviour for different driving conditions and preferences. Race mode includes Drift Mode, Drag Race and Launch Control functions.

Simulated Engine Sounds and Gear Changes

Mercedes-AMG has developed AMGFORCE Sport+ to provide simulated engine sounds and gear-change effects in the electric SUV. The GT53 uses simulated six-cylinder sounds, while the GT55 and GT63 reproduce V8-style sounds.

According to AMG, the sound system was developed using recordings of real engines captured with more than 100 measurements and 16 microphones. The output changes with acceleration and driving style.

Steering-wheel paddles allow drivers to activate simulated gear changes. Seat vibrations and a dedicated display are also designed to reproduce elements associated with driving a combustion-engine AMG model.

These functions are simulated features rather than indicators of an actual combustion engine or conventional multi-gear powertrain.

Exterior Design and Aerodynamics

The GT SUV shares styling elements with the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, including a sloping roofline, wide stance, muscular wheel arches and frameless side windows. Six circular rear lights provide a distinctive rear design.

Active aerodynamic features are intended to balance cooling requirements, stability and efficiency. The Aerokinetics Airpanel system uses movable louvers in the front bumper to regulate airflow, closing when additional cooling is not required to reduce aerodynamic drag.

An active rear spoiler is fitted to the GT55 and GT63, adjusting its position to support stability and traction.

Interior Displays and Cargo Space

The cabin features a 10.2-inch digital instrument display and a 14-inch central infotainment screen. A 14-inch display for the front passenger is available as an option.

The SUV has a three-person rear bench with folding seatbacks and a panoramic glass roof that can switch between transparent and opaque modes. Buyers will also be able to customise the interior and exterior through Mercedes-Benz’s Manufaktur personalisation programme.

Cargo capacity is listed at 21.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats, with an additional 2.8 cubic feet in the front trunk.

US Launch Details Remain Unconfirmed

Mercedes-AMG expects the 2028 GT SUV to reach US dealerships in summer 2027. The company has not yet announced US prices, EPA range ratings or final market-specific specifications.

Further details on the US lineup and equipment are expected closer to the vehicle’s market introduction.
