Leapmotor has opened pre-orders in China for its new A05 electric vehicle, bringing the compact model a step closer to its official market launch as the Chinese automaker expands its A-series lineup.

The Stellantis-backed EV manufacturer said customers can reserve the vehicle with a 99 yuan deposit during a “blind reservation” period that runs until the official launch event. Buyers who place an early reservation will receive promotional pre-order benefits, although the company has not yet disclosed pricing or a launch date.

The A05 is the second vehicle built on Leapmotor’s A platform, following the A10 compact SUV, and the platform’s first sedan.

Although technically designed as a compact hatchback, the model is marketed as a sedan in the Chinese market.

According to regulatory filings, the A05 measures 4,200 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,560 mm high, with a 2,605 mm wheelbase.

Customers will be able to choose between 39.8 kWh and 53 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs supplied by Gotion High-Tech and Zenergy.

The company said the A05 supports DC fast charging capable of replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% in 16 minutes.

Technology Targets Urban Drivers

Inside, the A05 features Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8295 automotive processor, an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 14.6-inch central infotainment display.

Customers can also specify an optional LiDAR system that enables parking-space-to-parking-space navigation-assisted driving.

Leapmotor said the A05 is the only premium hatchback in its segment to offer both LiDAR and this level of assisted driving capability.

The automaker has also previewed a higher-spec A05s special edition featuring an exclusive metallic black exterior finish and pink wheels.

Once launched, the A05 will compete directly with established compact electric vehicles including the BYD Dolphin and Geely Xingyuan.
