Lamborghini enthusiasts and automotive aficionados have a fresh reason to anticipate the upcoming Monterey Car Week, as the renowned automaker is poised to introduce a fully electric concept car. This prototype, set to be showcased during the event, offers a tantalizing glimpse into Lamborghini’s forthcoming 2028 production electric vehicle.
Since its inception in 1963, Automobili Lamborghini has been renowned for creating one-off models that provide a preview of the company’s forthcoming technological and design direction. These unique creations serve as design and technical prototypes, offering insights into the evolution of Lamborghini’s future offerings. As stated in an official announcement, “In the 1960s, these one-offs were very often show cars bound for motor show parades. In just a few days at Monterey Car Week in California… Automobili Lamborghini will present the prototype of its first 100% electric car.”

While the automaker has maintained a level of secrecy around the details of the concept, including refraining from sharing even a teaser image, industry observers have garnered substantial insights into the forthcoming vehicle’s characteristics. It is widely anticipated that the concept will take the form of a four-seat Grand Tourer (GT), paying homage to the touring-focused front-engined vehicles from Lamborghini’s historical catalog of the 1960s and ’70s. Additionally, cues are expected to be drawn from the shelved 2008 Estoque sedan concept, while embracing the creative freedom afforded by an electric drivetrain’s compact and versatile packaging. The design philosophy, as alluded to by the company’s design head Mitja Borkert in the past, is projected to retain Lamborghini’s distinctive futuristic aesthetic.
However, in line with contemporary trends, the concept is speculated to feature heightened ground clearance, positioning it as more of a crossover rather than a conventional GT. While certain specifics remain undisclosed, such as the potential door configuration—whether two or four—it could potentially present an electric alternative to Ferrari’s V12-powered Purosangue crossover, if it opts for a four-door layout.

Despite being Lamborghini’s inaugural fully electric production EV, the forthcoming 2028 model isn’t the brand’s first venture into electrified powertrains. The recently introduced Revuelto already boasts a plug-in powertrain, a technology slated to make its way to the next year’s successor to the Huracan and the immensely successful Urus SUV. Industry reports also suggest Lamborghini’s intentions to debut an all-electric Urus variant in 2029, a year after the anticipated GT electric car hits the market.
As the countdown to the Monterey Car Week begins, all eyes are on Lamborghini, eagerly awaiting the unveiling of this groundbreaking electric concept, signifying a momentous step in the evolution of one of the most iconic names in the automotive world.
