UK-based clean transport technology company KleanDrive has entered a partnership with logistics firm Welch Group to convert diesel-powered Renault D-Series 18-tonne rigid heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to fully electric drivetrains. The conversions will use KleanDrive’s modular plug-and-play electric system, with Welch Group overseeing installation and optional refurbishment of vehicle components.

The system is designed to reduce operating costs and emissions while extending the service life of the vehicle. KleanDrive’s electric conversion solution features a 352 kWh usable battery, using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells supplied by CATL, and integrates a Voith Electrical Drive System. The technology is mounted in a dedicated framework with associated power electronics for simplified installation.

The removed diesel components will be returned to fleet customers for reuse, allowing operators to manage mixed fleets more sustainably. Welch Group will install the e-drivetrain and, where necessary, refurbish the chassis, interior, or bodywork to support long-term vehicle use.

“Our modular, plug-and-play drivetrain can be fitted to the vehicle in a day, alongside other refurbishment work if required,” said Joe Tighe, founder of KleanDrive. “This means the vehicle is off the road for the minimum time, before returning to work on a fleet with lower running costs, zero tailpipe emissions and a quieter, smoother experience for both drivers and passengers.”

Welch Group’s Managing Director Chris Welch added, “KleanDrive offers a very neat package, making installation and maintenance easier to complete – it is really just two boxes to fit to the chassis and then plug-and-play.”

KleanDrive has previously deployed its electric retrofit technology in the bus sector. Earlier this year, the company partnered with UK transit operator First Bus to convert 30 diesel-powered Wrightbus Streetdeck models into battery-electric buses, demonstrating the system’s flexibility across different vehicle types.
