The anticipation for Kia’s entry into the electric pickup truck market is heating up as the first sightings of its electric pickup testing in the US have surfaced, suggesting that a rival to the Ford F-150 Lightning might be on the horizon.

Kia has already announced its intention to launch an electric truck in the US as part of its broader electric vehicle (EV) strategy. During its investor day in 2022, Kia unveiled plans to introduce two electric pickup trucks: one designed specifically as an EV pickup and another strategically aimed at emerging markets.

These electric trucks are key components of Kia’s strategy to launch two EVs per year and establish a comprehensive EV lineup by 2027. Kia has also confirmed that in the US, where mid-size SUVs and pickups are highly popular, electric versions of these models will be locally produced starting in 2024.

The introduction of the EV9, a larger electric SUV, has already made a significant impact, with a record 1,572 units sold in April alone, marking a 144% year-on-year increase in Kia’s monthly EV sales. To further drive interest, Kia is offering a $7,500 Customer Cash credit, potentially totaling up to $12,400 in savings until US production begins. Production of the EV9 at Kia’s West Point, Georgia facility is expected to commence this month.

The sighting of the electric pickup testing in the US, captured in a video by KindelAuto, reveals a larger-sized pickup with a bold front fascia reminiscent of the Ford F-150 Lightning. Design cues from the rugged EV9 can also be seen, suggesting a cohesive design language across Kia’s electric vehicle lineup.

While specific details and specifications of the electric pickup have not been confirmed by Kia, it is anticipated to ride on Hyundai’s next-generation EV platform. This platform is expected to enhance range and reduce costs, leveraging the success of the EV9, which boasts an EPA-estimated range of up to 304 miles and a starting price of $54,900.

Kia’s entry into the US electric pickup market will add to the competition alongside established players such as the Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Chevy Silverado EV. The sighting of the test model suggests that Kia is on track to expand its EV lineup and compete in this rapidly evolving segment.
