Kia is recalling certain 2024 EV9 electric SUVs due to an issue with the Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) feature, which enables drivers to move the vehicle remotely using the key fob.

This system is designed to help maneuver the car in tight spaces, but a software flaw could cause the vehicle to not stop properly when the feature is used.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified a problem with the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) software. If the driver repeatedly stops the vehicle at speeds around or below 2 mph using the remote, insufficient brake pressure may be applied. This could result in longer stopping distances, potentially endangering pedestrians in the vehicle’s path.

The recall affects 12,400 Kia EV9 models sold in the U.S., specifically those manufactured between September 25, 2023, and May 28, 2024.

Kia dealerships will update the software to ensure the braking system applies sufficient pressure during all RSPA operations. Vehicles built after May 28, 2024, already have the updated software.

The 2024 Kia EV9 is a popular electric SUV, featuring a starting price of approximately $55,000, seating for seven passengers, and a range of up to 304 miles.

Built on the E-GMP 800-volt platform, it offers fast charging capabilities, going from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes, making it an ideal choice for family road trips.
