Hyundai Motor Group, encompassing Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, is set to recall more than 147,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States due to potentially damaged charging units.

Following a recall of around 170,000 Hyundai and Kia EVs in South Korea announced by the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport last week, it was anticipated that a similar recall would occur in the US.

The recall in the US affects nearly 114,000 Hyundai vehicles, including the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, GV70, and Electrified GV80 models. Additionally, Kia is recalling 56,016 EV6 models in Korea.

The recall is due to a software glitch in the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that could affect the battery’s power, potentially causing charging issues and even a loss of power while driving.

In June 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation after receiving reports of ICCU power loss in 2022-2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 models. Kia’s EV6 was also under investigation due to similar complaints.

The NHTSA has now officially announced that Hyundai and Kia will recall 147,110 EVs in the US. Hyundai is recalling 98,878 EVs, including certain 2022-2024 IONIQ 5, 2023-2024 IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, and Genesis Electrified GV80 models. Kia will recall 48,232 2022-2024 EV6 models for the same issue with the ICCU.

Dealers will inspect the ICCU and replace it if necessary, in addition to providing an ICCU software update. Notification letters are expected to be sent to owners on May 14, 2024.

Hyundai stated that the improved ICCU software reduces thermal loading and lowers peak voltage during operation to mitigate ICCU damage.
