Jetta, the value-oriented brand operated by FAW-Volkswagen, has opened pre-sales in China for the M6 electric sedan, its first fully battery-electric model. The vehicle was announced earlier this year and is scheduled to officially enter the Chinese market in mid-October.

The M6 is priced at between 80,800 yuan and 99,800 yuan ($10,600-$13,100), placing it in China’s entry-level electric vehicle segment.

Jetta Expands Into New Energy Vehicles

FAW-Volkswagen and Volkswagen launched the new Jetta sub-brand at the beginning of the year through FAW Volkswagen Jetta Automotive Technology Co Ltd.

The brand is aimed primarily at cost-conscious Chinese consumers. Jetta is not intended to operate exclusively as an electric vehicle brand, but four of its five planned models are expected to be new energy vehicles (NEVs) by 2028.

The NEV lineup could include battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and extended-range models, while at least one planned model is expected to use an internal combustion engine exclusively.

The M6 is the first Jetta model to use a fully electric powertrain.

M6 Offers Up to 555 Km of Range

The M6 is based on Jetta’s proprietary “Jiesi” architecture and uses front-wheel drive across the lineup.

Chinese industry reports indicate that the electric sedan will be offered with motors producing either 113 kW or 145 kW of peak power.

The model measures 4.81 metres long, 1.90 metres wide and 1.50 metres high, with a wheelbase of 2.82 metres.

Three variants are planned for the Chinese market: the 465 Pro, 555 Max and 555 Ultra. The numbers in the variant names correspond to their claimed range under China’s domestic test cycle.

Battery cells are supplied by CALB, while FAW-Volkswagen assembles the complete battery packs locally.

Two Motor Outputs and Three Variants

China’s mandatory vehicle type approval information indicates that the M6 will have a top speed of either 166 km/h or 172 km/h, depending on motor configuration.

Kerb weight ranges from 1,557 kg to 1,628 kg across the available configurations.

The battery chemistry and detailed capacity figures have not yet been disclosed. The use of CALB cells was confirmed earlier in the vehicle’s development, while the finished battery packs are assembled by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture.

Jetta Targets China’s Entry-Level EV Segment

With the M6 priced below 100,000 yuan, Jetta is targeting China’s highly competitive entry-level electric vehicle market.

The launch is also part of FAW-Volkswagen’s broader effort to establish the Jetta brand as a separate volume-focused business. In the medium term, the sub-brand aims to produce and sell approximately 400,000 to 500,000 vehicles annually.

The M6 will officially enter the Chinese market in mid-October, marking Jetta’s first commercial step into battery-electric vehicles.
