Jaguar has revealed the name of its upcoming all-electric grand tourer, confirming that the new four-door model will be called the Type 01 as part of the company’s transition into a new electric-era lineup.
The British brand, owned by JLR, said the “Type” designation references Jaguar’s historic naming tradition dating back to the 1951 C-Type race car, while the “0” symbolizes electric propulsion and zero-emission driving.
The “1” identifies the model as the first vehicle in Jaguar’s next-generation electric portfolio.
Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover said the company aimed to combine its heritage with a redesigned electric future.
“We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before,” Glover said.
“Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind!’”
Jaguar first previewed its future design direction in December 2024 with the unveiling of the Type 00 concept vehicle, which drew significant attention as the automaker outlined plans to reposition itself as a fully electric luxury brand.
The Type 01 production model was initially expected to debut by the end of 2025, though the launch timeline was later delayed. Camouflaged prototypes were subsequently seen undergoing winter testing in early 2026.
The company has disclosed limited technical details about the vehicle so far, though it confirmed the model will feature a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system producing more than 1,000 PS (736 kW) and over 1,300 Newton metres of torque.
The configuration is expected to include two electric motors mounted on the rear axle.
Ahead of this weekend’s Formula E Monaco ePrix, Jaguar said Type 01 prototypes completed test laps on the Monaco street circuit as part of development work tied to the company’s motorsport programme.
According to Jaguar, the vehicle has been engineered using technology and experience gained from its championship-winning Jaguar TCS Racing operation in Formula E.
The Type 01 is expected to play a central role in Jaguar’s transformation strategy as the brand moves away from internal combustion-engine vehicles toward an all-electric luxury portfolio.
