Isuzu Motors and Accelera, the electric brand of U.S.-based Cummins, will launch a battery-electric powertrain for Isuzu’s F-Series medium-duty trucks, with production scheduled to commence in 2027.
The companies, which have been collaborating since 2019, have now formalized a supply agreement that will see Accelera providing key electric components for Isuzu’s Class 6 and 7 battery-electric trucks. The move follows initial customer trials that began in October 2022.
“The integration of Accelera’s advanced components into this truck showcases our expertise as a leader in zero-emissions powertrain technology and our commitment to delivering innovative solutions tailored to our customers’ needs,” said Amy Davis, president of Accelera.
The upcoming models will feature Accelera’s next-generation lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a 14Xe eAxle with an ELFA motor and inverter, and the modular Power Controls and Accessory Systems (PCAS) 3.0, which the company claims is 70% smaller than its predecessor. These components, designed for use across various commercial vehicle applications, will be manufactured or assembled in the United States.
Isuzu plans to manufacture the F-Series BEV at its new plant in South Carolina, alongside the diesel version of the model. The Japanese automaker has also confirmed that its smaller N-Series electric and diesel variants will be produced at the same facility.
The electric-powered F-Series is expected to have a redesigned front chassis with a low cab, distinguishing it from its diesel counterpart. The company has not yet disclosed technical specifications such as range or charging capabilities.
Isuzu has been ramping up its investment in electrification. In January 2024, the company announced a partnership with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution for battery supply, reportedly valued at approximately €632 million. The automaker is also collaborating with Toyota and Hino on bus electrification and with Honda on hydrogen-powered trucks.
With a growing focus on decarbonization in commercial transportation, Isuzu’s latest initiative is expected to bolster its position in the evolving zero-emissions vehicle market. “Introducing the new battery-electric powertrain for Isuzu’s F-Series medium-duty truck is a significant milestone in the journey toward a future of zero-emissions commercial transportation,” Davis said.
