IONNA, the EV fast-charging joint venture backed by eight global automakers, said it will invest more than $250 million in California over the next three years as it accelerates deployment of its charging network across the United States. The announcement followed kickoff events held at five metropolitan locations across the state.
The company said it has now contracted more than 1,000 charging bays in California as part of its multiyear investment plan through 2028. Nationwide, the network has more than 1,100 bays either operational or under construction, and around 4,000 contracted across the country.
IONNA CEO Seth Cutler said the network is moving into an activation phase after securing key sites. “We are transitioning from building to operating mode,” he said, noting the company’s progress in bringing contracted sites online.
California Deployment
Kickoff ceremonies were held in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose, and Westminster. The Westminster site will operate as the company’s first Rechargery Beacon flagship station. IONNA said its California focus is shifting from securing real estate to commissioning and opening infrastructure.
The company will also launch a California EV education program to accompany new site openings. The initiative includes collaboration with local dealers and EV advocacy groups to conduct public engagement events at Rechargery locations.
Infrastructure Strategy
IONNA said the $250 million commitment is its largest state-level investment to date. The rollout contributes to the joint venture’s long-term target of installing 30,000 fast-charging points across the United States by 2030. The company’s founding members are BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis, and Toyota.
Plug & Charge Integration
IONNA has expanded its Plug & Charge compatibility to seven automotive brands. Five founding automakers—BMW, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, and Mercedes-Benz—have completed integration. Honda, Stellantis, and Toyota expect to finish implementation by the end of 2026.
IONNA said Rivian and Ford vehicles have also gained Plug & Charge access through separate partnerships, with Ford integrating via the BlueOval Charge Network.
