Ionna, the North American fast-charging joint venture formed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, has officially opened its first charging hub and headquarters in Apex, North Carolina.
This marks the completion of the companyās initial phase, with plans to deploy over 1,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the region by the end of 2025.

The inaugural charging hub, named “Rechargery,” is equipped with four DC fast chargers, with an additional eight under construction. The chargers will provide up to 400 kW through both CCS and NACS connectors.
Ionna plans to expand rapidly, with over 100 sites already contracted and further locations set to open in Houston, Texas, and Abilene, Kansas, later this week. Additionally, six more hubs are in development, including a site in Willcox, Arizona.
The network aims to āset a new standard for interoperability and ease of useā in 2025, with features like Plug & Charge, AI-driven smart reservations, and in-car payments. Ionna is also positioning itself to become “the most integration-rich charging network” in America.

One of its key innovations is the Rechargery in Garner, North Carolina, which will feature Amazonās “Just Walk Out” convenience store technology, allowing customers to pick up items and pay automatically via mobile wallets.
Having completed its beta phase, during which over 4,400 charging sessions were conducted, Ionna now focuses on expanding to meet its goal of 30,000 ultra-fast charging points by 2030. The venture, which received antitrust approvals in February 2024, aims to address growing demands for EV infrastructure in the US and Canada.
