Ionity has opened a new ultra-fast electric vehicle charging hub at Greenwich Shopping Park in London, marking the charging operator’s first urban site in the capital as it prepares to expand its network across major UK cities. The hub has 12 charging bays capable of delivering up to 400 kW, with Ionity offering free charging for 24 hours on August 21 to mark the opening.
Greenwich Hub Targets Urban EV Charging Demand
The new charging site is located near the A206, the O2 Arena and Greenwich Peninsula, placing it close to residential and commercial areas in South London.
Ionity Launches Charging Rewards to Encourage Faster Turnover at EV Stations
Ionity said the Greenwich location is the first in a planned pipeline of ultra-rapid charging hubs in London. The company has not yet disclosed the number or specific locations of additional sites planned for the capital, but said further urban locations are under development across major UK cities.
The site’s location near a retail park and major road connections provides access to both local drivers and motorists travelling through the area.
Ionity Expands Beyond Motorway Charging
The Greenwich project represents a shift in Ionity’s network expansion toward urban charging alongside its established focus on long-distance travel.

The company said the deployment of chargers capable of delivering up to 400 kW is intended to bring its ultra-fast charging capability closer to where drivers live and work.
Uber Partnership Supports Charging Strategy
The Greenwich hub is also connected to Ionity’s partnership with Uber. The charging operator is offering what it describes as attractive charging rates to ride-hailing drivers using the site.
Ionity will use real-world utilisation data from the partnership to help determine where additional charging locations could have the greatest impact.
The data could support the company’s approach to selecting future urban charging locations as demand for public EV charging increases.
Free Charging Offered for Hub Launch
Ionity is promoting the opening with a 24-hour free charging campaign on Friday, August 21. Drivers can access the offer through the Ionity app.
