Hyundai Motor Company has released a video campaign showcasing the upcoming launch of its all-electric IONIQ 5 robotaxi in partnership with Motional, an autonomous driving joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv.
The vehicle, which is equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving technology and safety features, is set to be launched in Las Vegas in late 2023. Las Vegas, known as the Entertainment Capital of the World and a popular tourist destination with up to 42.5 million annual visitors, offers a variety of unique environments for testing and data collection for the robotaxi.
The fully autonomous IONIQ 5 robotaxi aims to provide a safe and secure transportation option for visitors to the city who may rely on taxis and ride-hailing services during their stay.
The IONIQ 5 robotaxi is equipped with over 30 advanced sensors and an onboard computing system to navigate safely in a variety of environments, including crowded hotel driveways and streets populated with stretch limousines and billboard trucks.
It has demonstrated the ability to safely pick up passengers and navigate through unpredictable pedestrian behavior. The robotaxi will initially be launched in Las Vegas, followed by Los Angeles and other major cities in the U.S. and globally.
As part of its training, the vehicle is also learning to navigate the narrow and curvy streets of Boston, the street-level light rail service and protected bicycle lanes of San Diego, and left-side traffic in Singapore. In addition to its safety features, the IONIQ 5 robotaxi also offers a sustainable transportation option with zero tailpipe emissions.
Hyundai Motor has been providing opportunities for the public to experience the robotaxi as part of its global manifesto campaign, which promotes the company’s vision of “Progress for Humanity” and the idea that the robotaxi is a mobility solution with a focus on people.
