IKEA has launched a new initiative to decarbonise its road freight operations in Italy, partnering with logistics provider LC3 Trasporti to roll out a fleet of battery-electric heavy-duty trucks.
Under the project, more than 10 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 vehicles will be deployed by the third quarter of 2026, with two units already in daily operation. The trucks will be used for container transport to and from the ports of Genoa and La Spezia, as well as for deliveries to IKEA’s distribution centre in Piacenza and stores across northern Italy.

“This is an ambitious project aimed at significantly reducing our transportation climate footprint in Italy,” said Ewelina Taylor, global transport manager at Inter IKEA Group. “Thanks to this new triangle partnership we’re able to define the optimal set up together and come up with a solution that reduce the total costs, while also contributing to a cleaner and quieter environment.”
The initiative builds on LC3 Trasporti’s earlier adoption of the eActros 600. In May 2025, the company became the first operator in Italy to deploy the long-haul electric truck, initially for transport operations on behalf of Lidl. LC3 had previously disclosed an order for 30 units of the model, now allocating a portion of that fleet to IKEA’s logistics needs.

According to the partners, the electric trucks are expected to cover more than 1.2 million kilometres per year once fully deployed, eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions that would otherwise be generated by diesel-powered vehicles. The quieter operation of battery-electric trucks is also expected to support night-time deliveries in urban and residential areas.
“This project marks a turning point for LC3 Trasporti,” said Michele Ambrogi, commercial director of the company. “The introduction of the eActros 600 in partnership with IKEA and Daimler Truck Italia demonstrates that collaboration across the supply chain is the only real driver of change.”

Maurizio Pompei, chief executive of Daimler Truck Italia, said the deployment shows that electric long-haul transport is moving beyond pilot projects. “Seeing it enter service in a project of this scale confirms that the energy transition is already happening,” he said.
The eActros 600 is Daimler Truck’s first fully electric articulated truck designed for long-distance operations. It has been in series production since November 2024 and offers a range of up to 500 kilometres under favourable conditions, supported by a 621 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.
