Hyundai Motor said on Sunday that sales of its redesigned Nexo hydrogen-powered sport utility vehicle (SUV) have reached nearly 7,000 units in the first three months since its launch, sharply outpacing its predecessor.

The upgraded fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) recorded 6,767 sales between June and August, compared with 1,500 units for the first-generation Nexo during the same period after its release in 2018, according to the company.

Hyundai said the new Nexo offers a driving range of more than 700 kilometers on a single charge and features a high-efficiency powertrain with a maximum motor output of 150 kilowatts. The automaker also supplied 32 vehicles as protocol cars at last week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Energy Ministerial Meeting in the southern port city of Busan.

“The rising sales of the Nexo, along with its use at international events, indicate hydrogen mobility is gradually becoming part of everyday life,” a company official said.

The latest model marks Hyundai’s first full redesign of the Nexo in seven years and delivers a total system output of 190 kW. Alongside the SUV, Hyundai showcased hydrogen production technologies, including biogas-based and electrolysis-based systems, as well as hydrogen-powered commercial trucks and buses.

Inside, the Nexo features premium equipment such as active noise cancelling, sound-absorbing tires and soft-touch surfaces. Standard options include wireless phone charging, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, a head-up display, and dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system.
