Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 is the latest addition to the automaker’s EV-dedicated line-up, and has already secured a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The Ioniq 6 is set to go on sale for the first time in Australia on Wednesday, alongside the Ioniq 5, and is already creating buzz for its record-breaking performance.
ANCAP announced that the Ioniq 6 had achieved high scores across all four assessment categories, with a record high 97% in the Adult Occupant Protection category, matching only the Tesla Model Y. The Ioniq 6 also performed well in the Child Occupant Protection and Safety Assist categories, with scores of 88% and 90% respectively.

The only area where the Ioniq 6 fell short was in the Vulnerable Road User Protection category, with a score of 66%. ANCAP reported that the vehicle’s bonnet provided only “weak to adequate” protection to the head of a struck pedestrian, with poor results recorded at the base of the windscreen and on the stiff windscreen pillars. However, the Ioniq 6’s autonomous emergency braking system was praised for its ability to detect and respond to other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP’s chief executive, noted that electric vehicles have the potential to pose less risk to vehicle occupants in a frontal crash scenario compared to petrol and diesel cars. “We have seen that play out in testing of the Ioniq 6 – with only a very slight penalty applied for potential injury risk to adult occupants,” she said.

The Ioniq 6 was unveiled in July 2022 and recently underwent official range tests in the US, receiving an EPA estimated range of 361 miles. While Australians are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Ioniq 6, high demand means that securing one may require some luck. Nonetheless, with its impressive safety rating and long range, the Ioniq 6 is sure to be a popular choice among EV enthusiasts.
