The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been awarded the Top Safety Pick+ status for 2024 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), highlighting its strong safety performance. The model excelled in rear-passenger protection during the revised moderate overlap front test. In comparison, Hyundai’s Santa Fe and Sonata secured the Top Safety Pick award, with slightly lower performance in the same evaluation.
According to IIHS reports, the Ioniq 5 showed superior rear-passenger safety measures, with the dummy’s head maintaining a safe distance from the front seatback, indicating a low risk of head, neck, or chest injuries. In contrast, the Santa Fe and Sonata displayed potential weaknesses in protecting rear occupants, which could increase the risk of injuries.
All three Hyundai models performed well in other essential IIHS tests required for Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ status. They received good ratings in the small overlap front test and the updated side test, and their headlights across all trims were rated acceptable or good.
Headlight quality varied among the models, with the Sonata having good-rated headlights for all trims and the Santa Fe featuring acceptable ones. The Ioniq 5 offered a choice between acceptable and good headlights. Regarding pedestrian crash prevention, both the Santa Fe and Sonata’s standard front crash prevention systems received good ratings, while the Ioniq 5’s system was rated acceptable
