Hyundai Motor Co. has introduced the Initium, a hydrogen fuel cell concept vehicle that previews the design language and technology set to feature in the next-generation Nexo, slated for production in early 2025.

The Initium concept will make its debut at both the LA Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November, showcasing Hyundai’s advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology and its vision for future SUV styling.

Hyundai has revealed some preliminary specs for the upcoming hydrogen SUV, including a 150 kW electric motor and a range exceeding 650 kilometers.

The company noted improvements in both fuel cell output and battery capacity, increasing the electric motor output to 150 kW, up from the current Nexo’s 120 kW motor and 95 kW fuel cell. “This development ensures drivers experience smooth driving in urban areas and at higher speeds on highways,” Hyundai stated, emphasizing the enhanced versatility of its latest fuel cell system.

However, the reported range of 650 kilometers matches rather than exceeds the current Nexo’s 666-kilometer WLTP range, which suggests the design could be trading efficiency for the model’s aerodynamic profile.

Unlike its sleeker predecessor, the Initium’s styling leans heavily on Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 with sharp edges and a boxier roof rack, which may slightly impact fuel efficiency.

In addition to styling, Hyundai plans to equip the Initium with a hydrogen-specific route planner, integrating refueling infrastructure seamlessly into navigation.

This system will display real-time availability and waiting times for hydrogen stations, aiming to ease one of the primary challenges facing hydrogen vehicle owners. Further details on the Initium’s interior, which Hyundai describes as spacious and comfortable, are expected at its trade show premiere.
