Hyundai’s largest electric SUV, the Ioniq 9, is expected to receive a rugged XRT trim after new images revealed prototypes with significant off-road upgrades. The move would align with the automaker’s strategy of expanding its electric lineup with both performance and adventure-focused editions.
The three-row Ioniq 9, introduced last year, has been noted for its lounge-like interior, expansive cabin space exceeding that of the Ford Explorer, and advanced digital displays. The electric SUV delivers an EPA-estimated range of 335 miles in the U.S. and up to 385 miles under Europe’s WLTP standard. Pricing in the U.S. starts at $60,555, while in Europe the model is offered from £64,995 ($87,500).

Hyundai design chief Simon Loasby confirmed that two additional versions of the Ioniq 9 are in development. “We are working on two distinct projects—N and XRT—apart from the standard lineup,” Loasby said when unveiling the SUV last year, according to TheKoreanCarBlog. Prototypes seen in recent months suggest the XRT trim will include large all-terrain tires, a lifted suspension, tow hooks, and modified bumpers.

The upgrades are expected to follow the example of the Ioniq 5 XRT, which added reinforced bumpers, side skirts, exclusive 18-inch wheels, and XRT-specific interior detailing such as patterned H-Trex seating and all-weather mats. Industry analysts anticipate the Ioniq 9 XRT will adopt a similar pricing strategy, positioned below the top trims to attract buyers seeking off-road capability without reaching the $78,090 cost of the AWD Performance Calligraphy Design edition.
Hyundai has not provided an official launch date for the Ioniq 9 XRT. However, repeated sightings of camouflaged prototypes suggest the off-road version could be announced in the near future as part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to diversify its EV portfolio.
