The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has been crowned the most fuel-efficient vehicle among 2024 models sold in the U.S. market, according to Fuel Economy, a fuel-saving information site jointly operated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Ioniq 6 Long Range Rear Wheel Drive model, equipped with 18-inch wheels, achieved an impressive combined fuel efficiency rating of 140 MPGe (Miles Per Gallon Equivalent). This marks the second consecutive year that the Ioniq 6 has received recognition from the EPA as the most efficient electric vehicle, following the certification of the 2023 model last year.

MPGe is the EPA’s standard measure of fuel efficiency for electric vehicles, representing the number of miles an electric vehicle can travel on the equivalent energy content of one gallon of gasoline.

In the survey, four models of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 made it to the top 10 list. The regular rear-wheel model achieved 135 MPGe, ranking third, while the long-range all-wheel model with 18-inch wheels achieved 121 MPGe, placing fifth. The long-range rear-wheel model with 20-inch wheels achieved 117 MPGe, securing seventh place.

Alongside the Ioniq 6, the Kia EV6 Long Range-Standard Rear Wheel tied for seventh place with 117 MPGe, followed by the Hyundai Kona Electric Long Range at eighth place with 116 MPGe, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range Rear Wheel at 10th place with 114 MPGe. Notably, eight Korean-made EVs made it to the top 10 most fuel-efficient vehicles in the U.S., underlining the industry’s commitment to efficiency.

Tesla, however, has not yet reported fuel efficiency for its 2024 model year cars to the EPA. The 2023 models of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y were on par or slightly below the Ioniq 6 in terms of fuel efficiency, with the 2024 models expected to show a slight decrease based on EPA estimates listed on Tesla’s official U.S. website.

In separate tests, the Ioniq 6 Long Range rear-wheel drive model also excelled in EV performance, topping the list with a range of 868 miles on a one-hour charge, according to U.S. automotive website Edmunds.
