The IONIQ 5 became the winner for SUV of the Year after standing out from tough competition with its sharp styling, cohesion of details and user experience.

The assessment for SUV of the Year uses six main criteria, namely safety, efficiency, value, progress in design, engineering excellence, and desired functional performance.

The majority of models competing for the SUV of the Year award are new energy vehicles such as electric cars, with hybrids, plug-in hybrids. SUV itself is very competitive for electric vehicles. Most of the manufacturers issuing their first electric vehicles are in the SUV segment.

“For the first time in MotorTrend’s 74-year history, the majority of competitors vying for MotorTrend SUV of the Year are electric cars, with hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full battery-electric power,” said Ed Loh, editorial head, MotorTren Group. “The volume and capabilities of all competitors make it one of the most competitive SUV programs of the Year, which is great news for consumers looking for the efficient SUV and crossover of the future.”

The MotorTrend editorial team says the IONIQ 5 is fun to drive, combining sharp handling and expert chassis tuning with luxury-level comfort and ride quality in an affordable mainstream EV. In terms of design, the IONIQ 5 comes with 80’s and 90’s lines, but is still very modern.

“This MotorTrend SUV of the Year winning the IONIQ 5 speaks to Hyundai’s impressive ability to execute in design, engineering, manufacturing and product development,” said José Muñoz, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. “This is one of the most prestigious awards in the automotive industry and we are honored that the IONIQ 5 is recognized for its range, power, charging speed, design, interior space and cutting edge technology.”

Previously, IONIQ 5 also received other prestigious awards such as Car And Driver’s EV Of The Year and 2022 World Car of The Year.
