IONIQ 5 Crash Test IONIQ 5 Crash Test

Since it was first introduced to the public last year, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been at the top of the shopping list thanks to its modern retro design, excellent specifications, and a relatively affordable price for an electric vehicle.

Earlier this year, this electric crossover even won the prestigious World Car of the Year award for 2022. From a safety point of view, the Ioniq 5 has just received top marks for crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

IIHS gave its highest rating, Top Safety Pick+, to the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The electric crossover from the South Korean manufacturer received the best available score, “good”, in all six tests conducted.

The crash tests performed included a small front overlap test for the driver and passenger sides, a moderate front overlap, and a side impact test.

Passenger dummies (back and front seats) paired during crash tests received “good” scores on their head/neck, chest, hip/thigh, and lower leg/leg results.

In addition to having minimal effect on passenger dolls, the Ioniq 5 also achieved a top “good” score for roof, headrest and seat strength.

TSP winners must also be available with “Good” or “Acceptable” headlights. The “plus” designation is given to models that have “Good” or “Acceptable” headlights across all trim levels and packages.

The child seat anchors on the Ioniq 5 are rated “acceptable”. Scores are mostly based on ease of installation. The presence of a frontal collision warning system and its ability to detect pedestrians are also highly rated.

The Ioniq 5 on the market comes in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. As a RWD vehicle it produces 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque with a battery range of 303 miles. In AWD, it produces 320 hp and a total torque of 446 lb-ft, while the range drops to 256 miles.

The IONIQ 5 is equipped with ADAS “Hyundai SmartSense”, which significantly improves driving safety. The electric crossover is the first Hyundai model to offer Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2). This technology includes sensors, cameras, alerts and alarms, plus the software that controls them.
