Hyundai has successfully delivered 500 fuel cell commercial vehicles to businesses in Guangzhou, marking a significant step in what is anticipated to be a larger deployment. The government of Guangdong Province, of which Guangzhou is the capital, has placed an order for fuel cell systems for a total of 1,500 vehicles, representing one of the largest fuel cell vehicle deployments in China.
The vehicles were distributed by H2 Solution, a joint venture involving Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou and two local state-owned enterprises. The delivery includes a range of vehicles such as logistic vehicles, freezer trucks, road sweepers, and buses.

An additional 1,000 vehicles are slated for delivery, following a memorandum of understanding between the Guangdong Provincial government and Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou. The comprehensive delivery of 1,500 units is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The fuel cell systems for these vehicles will be manufactured at the Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou plant, which commenced commercial operations in June 2022. This facility, Hyundai’s first fuel cell production base outside South Korea, has an annual capacity of 6,500 systems and features a stack factory, research building, offices, and an innovation center. The manufacturer has invested approximately 8 billion yuan (around 1.1 billion US dollars) in the plant.

Reports suggest that the collaboration between the regional government and Hyundai may extend beyond the current order. The Guangdong Province unveiled a hydrogen plan in late December, outlining ambitions to have 2,500 fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) on the road by 2025 and 10,000 by 2030.
