Hyundai Mobis has introduced the Mobion concept at CES, offering a fresh perspective on electric mobility beyond the conventional notions of forward and reverse.

The concept, based on the Hyundai Ioniq 5, boasts a distinctive design featuring new bumpers and lighting units designed not only for aesthetics but also to convey information to pedestrians and other drivers.

The innovative lighting system includes rear lights that can alert fellow road users to the presence of pedestrians in a crosswalk, enhancing safety. Furthermore, the Mobion concept introduces a ground projection system that can illuminate the vehicle’s direction on the ground using lights across a 360-degree spectrum. This system can even project crosswalk stripes to guide pedestrians.

While the attention-grabbing lighting features are notable, the primary focus of the Mobion concept is to showcase Hyundai Mobis’ next-generation e-Corner System. Although specific details about the system were not provided, it integrates an electric motor with steering, braking, and suspension functions, enabling each wheel to operate independently.

The concept’s versatility is demonstrated by wheels that can rotate, allowing the vehicle to pivot, drive diagonally, move sideways, and execute a 360-degree spin. Hyundai Mobis has also incorporated two short-distance lidar sensors near the headlights, accompanied by a long-distance lidar sensor in the front fascia.

This sensor configuration is touted to be valuable for lateral movement and effective recognition of nearby objects, particularly during maneuvers such as diagonal lane changes.

Hyundai Mobis Vice President Lee Seung-Hwan emphasized the significance of the Mobion concept, stating that it represents the embodiment of their core technologies, all of which are poised for immediate mass production.
