Hypnos Beds, a UK-based manufacturer of mattresses and beds, has introduced two Volvo FM Electric trucks to replace its diesel vehicles, marking a significant step toward sustainable logistics. Operated by logistics partner DFDS, the electric trucks will deliver Hypnos Beds’ luxury mattresses and bed furniture to retail outlets, hotels, and distribution centers in London and Milton Keynes.

The Volvo FM Electric trucks boast a power output of up to 490 kW and offer a range of up to 300 kilometers per charge. The rigid curtainside unit is equipped with five batteries, while the tractor unit carries the maximum of six. Both models feature Volvo’s advanced Camera Monitoring System (CMS), which replaces traditional exterior mirrors for enhanced safety and visibility.

“Introducing these two electric trucks into the Hypnos Beds fleet is an important step in accelerating its ambitious sustainability goals, as well as enhancing the efficiency of its operations,” said James Ferguson, Regional Operations Manager at DFDS. He credited Volvo’s support, including the installation of charging infrastructure and driver training, as critical in meeting the growing demand for low-emission transport solutions.

The electric trucks will charge overnight at Hypnos Beds’ Princes Risborough factory, where Volvo Trucks has installed two 43kW AC chargers. Located between London and Oxford, the facility is strategically positioned to support Hypnos Beds’ delivery operations.

The new vehicles align with DFDS’s ongoing efforts to expand its electric fleet. While Volvo Trucks did not confirm in its press release, these units likely form part of an October delivery, which added ten Volvo FM Electric trucks to DFDS’s fleet for operations in the UK and Ireland. DFDS has also announced plans to double its electric vehicle count with an additional order of 100 electric trucks from Volvo earlier in 2024.
