Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer BYD will officially enter the South Korean passenger car market on January 16, expanding its footprint in Asia after Japan. The company will hold a brand launch event to mark its official debut in the local market, following its earlier entry into South Korea’s commercial vehicle market.

BYD Korea’s website is currently counting down to the launch event, which marks a significant step for the company in diversifying its presence in South Korea. The company first entered the market in 2016, focusing on commercial vehicles, including forklifts, buses, and trucks.

In November 2024, BYD Korea confirmed its readiness to release passenger car brands in the South Korean market, with official sales expected to begin in early 2025. A recent report from South Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper indicated that BYD has finalized partnerships with six dealer networks to distribute and provide customer service for its passenger vehicles in the country. The partners include DT Networks, Samchully EV, Harmony Automobile, Vision Mobility, GNB Mobility, and SS Motors.

The move into South Korea’s passenger car market pits BYD against local industry leaders such as Hyundai and Kia. This expansion follows BYD’s entry into the Japanese passenger car market in 2023, where it competes with Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.
