China FAW Group’s Hongqi brand has unveiled an ultra-fast charging battery that completed charging from 10% to 70% state of charge in 3 minutes and 41 seconds during internal testing, highlighting the company’s latest advances in electric vehicle battery technology.

The battery was developed jointly by Hongqi and China Automotive New Energy Battery Technology (CNET). According to the company, recent charging tests conducted at 25 degrees Celsius demonstrated charging performance that exceeds current commercially available technologies.

New Battery Targets Faster Charging Performance

Hongqi said the battery reached 70% state of charge from 10% in 3 minutes and 41 seconds, while charging from 10% to 97% required 8 minutes and 3 seconds.

The company said the results represent an industry-leading level of charging performance.

For comparison, BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, introduced earlier this year, requires approximately 5 minutes to charge from 10% to 70% and around 9 minutes to reach 97% state of charge when used with the company’s latest flash-charging system.

Hongqi has not announced when the new battery will enter mass production or which future vehicle will debut the technology.

Battery Features 12C Charging Capability

According to Hongqi, the battery incorporates a newly developed ultra-fast charging anode that supports a peak charging rate of 12C, addressing charging limitations commonly associated with conventional lithium-ion battery cells.

The company also developed a proprietary low-desolvation-energy electrolyte designed to improve lithium-ion transport during charging.

Hongqi said it reduced the battery cell’s internal resistance by approximately 15% through the use of composite carbon-source coatings and bulk-phase doping technology, improving charging efficiency and power transfer.

The battery pack is equipped with an intelligent liquid-cooling system that maintains a temperature variation of less than 3 degrees Celsius across the pack during high-power charging.

The thermal management system automatically adjusts cooling performance according to operating conditions, including driving and parked charging scenarios, with the aim of improving efficiency while reducing energy consumption.

Safety Systems Monitor Fast Charging

Hongqi said the battery management system continuously monitors temperature, voltage and state of charge during fast charging.

The adaptive charging strategy dynamically adjusts charging power to limit rapid temperature increases while using closed-loop verification of battery voltage and charge levels to help prevent overcharging and overvoltage.

The company described the successful validation of the ultra-fast charging technology as an important milestone in its battery development program.

The announcement follows another recent battery technology milestone for the automaker. In December 2025, Hongqi introduced its first prototype vehicle equipped with an all-solid-state battery pack based on the Hongqi Tiangong 06 platform, demonstrating the brand’s continued investment in next-generation electric vehicle battery technologies.
