Here Technologies and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have confirmed a significant mapping collaboration, valued at $1 billion, announced this week at CES in Las Vegas. The 10-year agreement combines Here’s precision location technology with AWS’ extensive cloud infrastructure to create AI-powered live maps for automakers developing software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

The collaboration aims to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) expedite the development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving (AD) technologies, potentially accelerating the introduction of semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles. As noted by Here, location technology is critical for SDVs but is also data-intensive, making AWS’ vast computing power essential for the success of the partnership.

“We’ve worked with AWS for over a decade, and now, with this collaboration, we’re advancing the integration of AI and machine learning to process vast amounts of vehicle data and provide real-time, automated updates to maps,” said Here CEO Mike Nefkens. He added, “This will enable our customers to speed up software development and enhance real-time data analytics throughout the SDV lifecycle.”

One of the new tools resulting from the collaboration is SceneXtract, introduced at CES, which allows automakers to simulate real-world environments for ADAS and AD testing, mimicking airline simulator technology. This tool aims to eliminate the time and costs associated with on-road testing, which has slowed the rollout of automated driving technologies.

AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “By leveraging the global scale, reliability, and AI capabilities of AWS, we are helping automakers create innovative ways to enhance the driving experience through AI-driven mapping applications.”

In addition to the mapping deal, Here also introduced its AI Assistant, an advanced feature that uses multiple GenAI large language models to offer real-time insights for drivers, including smart routing, local amenities, tolls, speed limits, and more. “The Here AI Assistant sets a new benchmark for efficiency, precision, and user experience in the transportation industry,” said Denise Doyle, Here’s Chief Product Officer. The service will be available later this year through the HERE WeGo app.
