Gotion High-Tech, a Chinese battery cell manufacturer and partner of Volkswagen, is considering the construction of a large battery cell factory in Morocco. The specific timeline for the project’s construction and production launch is still unclear.
A letter of intent has already been signed by Gotion and the Moroccan government, outlining a potential investment of 65 billion dirhams (approximately 6 billion euros) for a battery cell factory with an annual capacity of 100 gigawatt-hours. This significant investment is expected to create over 25,000 job opportunities, according to the organizers. Typically, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) serves as the initial step before the potential signing of an investment agreement, as explained by Mohcine Jazouli, the Moroccan Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Convergence, and the Evaluation of Public Policies.
Li Zhen, Chairman of Gotion High-Tech, expressed the group’s satisfaction in collaborating with Morocco on this project, aiming to contribute to decarbonization efforts and the implementation of innovative energy solutions. Li Zhen also commended the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which has facilitated Morocco’s establishment of robust economic relations with various countries worldwide.
Gotion High-Tech has recently embarked on an expansion strategy, announcing plans for new international factories in Thailand and Vietnam in December and November of the previous year, along with additional facilities in China. In October of the same year, the company confirmed its intention to establish a factory in Michigan, benefiting from subsidies provided by the United States. Furthermore, a factory in Germany is scheduled to commence operations later this year. Most recently, Gotion High-Tech unveiled a new lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) battery cell, designed to achieve ranges of approximately 1,000 kilometers.
