Google has begun rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to Android Auto, replacing Google Assistant on vehicles equipped with the smartphone projection system, the company announced on Thursday. The rollout applies to users who have upgraded to Gemini on their Android devices.
Android Auto is an app that projects features like navigation, music, and messaging from an Android phone to a vehicle’s display. By integrating Gemini, Google says users can now engage in more natural, back-and-forth conversations while driving, allowing for more complex tasks.
“By bringing Gemini to Android Auto, people can ask questions, manage messages, access emails, and get personalized recommendations while on the go,” Google said. Users can ask Gemini to find nearby restaurants along their route, provide details about a venue, summarize unread emails, or even translate messages before sending.
Gemini also supports entertainment functions. Drivers can request playlists with specific instructions, such as a “three-hour upbeat road trip playlist for the kids,” compatible with streaming services including YouTube Music and Spotify. Additionally, the assistant offers a “Live” mode, allowing drivers to ask questions, brainstorm ideas, or receive interactive guidance on destinations and activities.
The AI system is available in 45 languages globally. Users can access Gemini on Android Auto by ensuring the Gemini app is installed on their phone. Once available, a tooltip appears on the vehicle’s display, and voice commands are initiated by saying “Hey, Google” or pressing the microphone button on the car screen or steering wheel.
