Genesis, Hyundai’s premium brand, announced plans to phase out pure combustion models in Europe this year as it transitions to an all-electric product lineup.

The brand will update its three existing battery electric vehicles (BEVs)—the GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80—with enhancements in battery capacity, equipment, and overall performance.

The Electrified G80 saloon is set to debut in the second quarter with a longer wheelbase and increased range. While specific updates are pending, the current model features an 87.2 kWh battery, offering up to 520 kilometers of range. The Electrified GV70 SUV will undergo a mid-life facelift this summer, including visual updates and a longer range. While Genesis has not confirmed details, an upgrade to an 84 kWh battery—already available in the U.S. version—seems likely.

The GV60, based on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, received a design refresh earlier this year. Updates are expected to align with recent battery upgrades in sibling models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, potentially increasing its capacity to 84 kWh.

Looking ahead, Genesis hinted at expanding its electric range with new models in different segments. Among these is the GV60 Magma, a high-performance electric variant expected to adopt the 478 kW drivetrain from Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N and Kia’s EV6 GT. Additionally, hybrid models will be introduced as part of Genesis’s broader electrification strategy.

Genesis is also discontinuing its conventional combustion models in Europe. The G70, G70 Shooting Brake, and G80 are now only available from existing stock, while the flagship G90 will remain in Germany and Switzerland until mid-year before being phased out.

“Since arriving in the UK, Genesis has led the way in premium electrification,” said Jonny Miller, Brand Director for Genesis Motor UK. “We’re committed to responding to customer and market feedback, and we’re confident our transition to an electric range, joined by future hybrid models, is the right direction.”

Hyundai previously aimed for a complete switch to pure electric drives by 2025, but the timeline was softened in 2024 to include hybrid options. With this strategic shift, Genesis aims to strengthen its position in the premium EV market while addressing evolving consumer demands.
