In a significant move towards promoting zero-emission transportation, Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has successfully acquired Nikola Corporation’s Phoenix Hydrogen Hub (PHH) project. The strategic decision by Nikola allows the company to tap into vital capital and resources, expediting the development of their Class 8 hydrogen-fueled trucks.

The Phoenix Hydrogen Hub, situated near Phoenix in Buckeye, Arizona, is a groundbreaking green hydrogen initiative designed to be developed in phases, aligned with the growing demand for clean energy solutions. The project is currently in the final stages of the permitting process, with hydrogen production expected to commence by mid-decade.

Nikola Corporation’s President and CEO, Michael Lohscheller, emphasized the company’s primary goal of promoting zero-emission trucks on the roads. The acquisition by FFI marks a significant milestone in establishing one of the country’s foremost and crucial hydrogen hubs. This development plays a pivotal role in creating a robust local infrastructure to expedite the adoption of hydrogen as a fuel for zero-emission vehicles.

The collaboration between Nikola and FFI on this deal has been ongoing for over six months, dating back to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in January. The agreement aimed to explore the co-development of large-scale green hydrogen production facilities in the United States.

As part of the acquisition, FFI and Nikola are actively engaged in working on a hydrogen supply agreement, ensuring the availability of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles to meet the surging demand. The growing adoption of hydrogen as a zero-emission fuel in the transportation sector is expected to be bolstered by various federal incentives, including the hydrogen tax credit introduced in the Inflation Reduction Act. Additionally, state-level initiatives such as California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard are anticipated to further promote the use of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
