The FIA and Formula E have extended their partnership by 15 years, ensuring the all-electric racing series retains its position as the exclusive fully electric single-seater category with FIA World Championship status until at least 2054. The agreement, announced ahead of the season finale in London, reinforces Formula E’s long-term role in the evolution of electric motorsport.
The extended contract grants Formula E continued exclusivity in the electric single-seater space, effectively ruling out the possibility of an all-electric Formula 1 series before the mid-21st century. With backing from the FIA and Formula E Holdings—majority owned by Liberty Global—the series will continue to focus on expanding its global reach and driving innovation in electric vehicle technology.
The agreement is expected to support Formula E’s ongoing development strategy, including the rollout of the Gen4 cars in the 2026/2027 season. These next-generation race cars will feature increased power output of up to 600 kW, with faster acceleration and enhanced performance. The FIA noted that by 2054, Formula E vehicles are projected to match or surpass the performance of top-tier single-seater categories, while further contributing to consumer-relevant electric vehicle technologies.
“This long-term extension of the partnership enables us to continue building the brand, investing in the product and delivering some of the most captivating racing that has made us famous,” said Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem called the renewal “a fantastic outcome for the sport and a clear reflection of our ongoing strategy at the FIA to strengthen commercial partnerships and drive long-term value across all facets of motor sport.”
