Ford Considers Reviving Iconic Capri Model as Electric Crossover on Volkswagen’s MEB Platform

Ford is reportedly considering reviving the iconic Capri model for its second European electric vehicle based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform. While it won’t be a successor to the legendary sports coupe, the new Capri will be a four-door crossover with modern styling.

According to reports in the Sun and Autocar, Ford is planning to sell 600,000 units of the new Capri over six years, following the success of the recently launched MEB-powered Explorer. “Retro designs aren’t moving us forward. It’s always about a totally new interpretation: that’s what makes it interesting,” said Ford’s European chief designer, Amko Leenarts.

The use of iconic brand names for completely different electric model ranges is not new for Ford. The Mustang Mach-E electric SUV has little in common with the legendary Mustang coupe, and the US model Ford Explorer, as a five-meter SUV, has no relation to the newly unveiled MEB SUV, which measures 4.45 meters in length.

Ford’s decision to revive the Capri model is a bold move that underscores the company’s commitment to electrification and innovation. The new Capri will be a modern interpretation of the classic sports coupe, designed to appeal to a new generation of car buyers who are looking for an electric vehicle that is both stylish and practical.

The decision to use the Capri name for the new electric crossover reflects Ford’s confidence in the enduring appeal of the iconic brand. “The Capri is a legendary name that still resonates with car enthusiasts all over the world,” said a Ford spokesperson. “We believe that the new electric Capri will be a worthy successor to the classic sports coupe, and we are excited to bring it to market.”

With the new Capri, Ford is once again proving its commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of electric mobility.
