FedEx Orders 150 Blue Arc EV Trucks from The Shyft Group

The Shyft Group, through its subsidiary Blue Arc, has secured a significant order from FedEx for 150 Blue Arc EV Trucks. These electric vehicles will be integrated into FedEx’s pickup and delivery fleet in the United States.

The decision to order the Blue Arc EV Trucks followed a series of tests conducted by FedEx, where the vehicles were put through their paces on last-mile delivery routes in Memphis. The trucks operated for extended 8-10 hour routes under challenging conditions, including temperatures ranging from 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

John Dunn, President and CEO of The Shyft Group, highlighted the importance of the collaboration with FedEx in refining their strategy for meeting commercial-grade EV fleet needs. He stated, “Customer satisfaction is core to our operations, and we look forward to seeing these vehicles on the road for FedEx, reflecting our mutual commitment to innovation and sustainability.”

The Blue Arc electric trucks are designed for efficiency on long routes, boasting the ability to regenerate 20-30 kW of power through a regenerative braking system.

Manufactured at a factory in Charlotte, Michigan, production of the electric delivery trucks commenced last year. The vehicles are equipped with batteries sourced from Proterra. Initially, the trucks will be equipped with Proterra’s H-series battery system, providing a range of 150 to 175 miles, or about 240 to 280 kilometers.

Pat Donlon, Vice President of Global Vehicles at FedEx Express, expressed eagerness to incorporate new and efficient electric vehicle models into their fleet as part of their phased electrification plan for their global pickup and delivery fleet by 2040. He stated, “We look forward to bringing the Blue Arc into our growing portfolio of electric vehicles in service around the world.”

FedEx has been actively increasing its electric vehicle acquisitions globally. Apart from the order for 150 Blue Arc EV Trucks in the U.S., FedEx has also ordered 33 eSprinters to support its operations in Spain and electric transporters for use in London. Additionally, FedEx has an ongoing procurement deal with General Motors subsidiary BrightDrop.
