Dutch transport company Hermes has introduced its new generation of Citea electric buses in Eindhoven, marking a significant step towards a fully emission-free fleet in Southeast Brabant. The deployment of the first 32 buses of a total of 64 from VDL Bus & Coach celebrates their premiere in North Brabant.

Operated by Transdev subsidiary Hermes, the new buses will serve city routes in Eindhoven and neighboring municipalities. To mark the launch, Hermes is offering Eindhoven residents a ‘Zero Emission Day Pass,’ allowing free travel on the electric buses outside peak times until June 30th, enabling them to experience the comfort of the new buses.

The deployment of the new buses, however, has faced significant delays. Hermes ordered the first 32 vehicles in April 2021, expecting them to be in operation around Eindhoven from January 2022, with delivery scheduled for completion by March 2022. However, the buses were only deployed for the first time at the end of May 2024. The remaining 32 Citeas from the later order are expected to follow later this year.

Hermes’ order was the first for the completely new Citea generation, and the company is the first to deploy these buses in regular service. The buses are based on a new electric platform, available in four lengths, with Hermes opting for the LF-122, a 12.2-meter solo bus. The new buses feature batteries installed in the floor, rather than on the roof, and the entire side wall is made of a continuous composite material, reducing weight and increasing range.

Richard van den Dungen, CCO of VDL Bus & Coach, expressed pride in seeing the new Citeas in Eindhoven, stating, “The traveler and the driver are going to experience an extremely comfortable travel experience, also in the knowledge that this journey is more environmentally friendly than traveling with the previous generations of buses.”

Martijn Mentink, Regional Director of Hermes, highlighted the significance of the new buses for the region, stating, “With these new zero-emission city buses, we are taking the next step towards a completely emission-free fleet in Southeast Brabant. It is good news both for them and for the residents of our region.”
