Hyundai has officially unveiled its highly anticipated electric vehicle, the Creta Electric SUV, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward a more sustainable future. Launched on Thursday, the Creta EV draws design inspiration and innovative features from Hyundai’s IONIQ lineup, featuring a sleek and modern aesthetic that sets it apart from traditional gas-powered models. With an impressive range of nearly 300 miles, this new electric SUV promises to redefine the electric vehicle landscape, especially in the Indian market.

One of the standout features of the Creta EV is its local manufacturing, as Mr. Tarun Garg, CEO of Hyundai India, pointed out during the launch event. “Our first localized electric SUV in India,” Garg explained, emphasizing the importance of this model for the Indian electric vehicle market. The Creta EV builds on the success of the gas-powered version, of which over 1.1 million units have been sold. Hyundai aims to extend its legacy with this electric variant, offering cutting-edge technology and an eco-friendly driving experience.

In terms of design, the Creta EV brings a futuristic touch with its bold IONIQ-inspired elements. The vehicle boasts a pixelated front grille, a lower bumper, LED tail lamps, and Active Air Flaps (AAF) for enhanced efficiency. Additionally, the SUV features Aero Alloy Wheels and Low Rolling Resistance tires, which contribute to better performance and range. Hyundai has equipped the Creta EV with two battery pack options: a 42 kWh battery offering a range of 242 miles (390 km) and a larger 51.4 kWh battery providing an impressive 293 miles (473 km) on a single charge.

Charging the Creta EV is efficient, thanks to its DC fast-charging capability, which allows the vehicle to charge from 10% to 80% in just 58 minutes. For more conventional charging, the electric SUV is compatible with the 11 kW Smart Connected Wall Box charger, enabling a full charge from 10% to 100% in approximately 4 hours. Furthermore, the Creta EV offers an ergonomic shift-by-wire driving system, a digital key for added convenience, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality that allows users to power electronics and other devices with the vehicle’s battery.

The Creta EV will be available in four distinct models: Executive, Smart, Premium, and Excellence, offering buyers a range of options to suit their needs. Color choices include eight monotone, two dual-tone, and three matte finishes, including a special ocean blue with a black roof. The SUV is set for its official launch at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo on January 17, 2025. While the exact price is yet to be revealed, it is expected to start at around $25,000 (Rs 22.00 Lakh), a significant increase over the $12,800 (Rs 10.99 Lakh) starting price of the 2024 gas-powered Creta.

Unfortunately, the Hyundai Creta EV will not be available in the US market, as it is tailored specifically for India. However, Hyundai is focusing on other electric vehicle launches in the US, such as the 2025 IONIQ 5 and the IONIQ 9, which will qualify for the $7,500 US tax credit. The Creta EV’s unveiling represents a major step in Hyundai’s electric vehicle strategy, offering Indian consumers a modern, efficient, and sustainable alternative to traditional SUVs.
